Bangladesh Mahila Parishad's Narayanganj district movement sub-committee organized an exchange of views meeting at its office on Wednesday, September 9, at 4 PM to mark International CEDAW Day. The event was held under the theme "Withdraw reservations from Articles 2 and 16.1(c) of the CEDAW Convention, ensure women's equal rights to property to protect their civil rights." Reena Ahmed, Narayanganj district president of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, presided over the session.

Speakers explained that CEDAW, adopted by the UN General Assembly on 18 December 1979 and effective from 3 September 1981, is the only international treaty devoted solely to women's rights, containing 30 articles. Bangladesh signed and ratified CEDAW on 24 September 1984 but retained reservations on Articles 2 and 16(1)(c), which concern equality in marriage and divorce. Speakers noted that despite multiple changes in government, these reservations remain in place, preventing genuine equality between men and women, and called for their withdrawal along with full implementation of CEDAW to curb rising violence against women.

Participants also called for a Uniform Family Law applicable to people of all religions regarding marriage, divorce, maintenance, and inheritance, arguing that existing religion-based family laws discriminate against women. They urged awareness campaigns from cities to villages. The meeting was conducted by General Secretary Rahima Khatun and Movement Secretary Sahanara Begum, with participation from lawyers, women entrepreneurs, civil society representatives, journalists, teachers, students, and over fifty members of district and local committees.
