Eminent citizens expressed deep concern over the deteriorating law and order situation, the spread of anti-social culture, violence against women and children, and the erosion of social values in Bangladesh. They called for building public opinion and strengthening social movements against these forms of injustice and unrest. The remarks came at an exchange-of-views meeting organized by the National Committee for Prevention of Violence Against Women, Children and Social Injustice, chaired by its convener and Bangladesh Mahila Parishad President Dr. Fauzia Moslem. Mahila Parishad General Secretary Maleka Banu also spoke, while the committee's member and Mahila Parishad Joint General Secretary Advocate Masuda Rehana Begum presented the keynote paper. Other speakers included former Appellate Division Justice Krishna Debnath, CPD Distinguished Fellow Prof. Rounaq Jahan, Liberation War Museum trustee Mofidul Hoque, senior journalist Sohrab Hasan, ICT expert and freedom fighter Mahbub Jaman, senior Supreme Court advocate S.M.A. Sabur, RIB Executive Director Dr. Meghna Guhathakurta, and Bangladesh Pratidin joint editor Masud Karim. The session was moderated by committee member and Central Legal Aid Secretary Rekha Saha. Economist M.M. Akash noted a rise in violence against women and children, including increasing sexual abuse of boys, with religious minorities and the poor often targeted, and highlighted victim-blaming and eroding social norms over the past year and a half. Senior journalist Basudev Dhar said the failure to try communal attacks over 54 years since independence has entrenched a culture of impunity, urging proper monitoring and site visits for every incident to prevent communal violence.
