Bangladesh Mahila Parishad has expressed deep concern over the mysterious death of Mariam Khatun, the second wife of Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam, Member of Parliament from Satkhira-4. According to news reports published on 21 September 2026, Mariam Khatun's body was recovered by police around 10 PM on 20 September 2026 from Flat No. 203 on the second floor of NAM Bhaban No. 5, an official residence allocated to Gazi Nazrul Islam near Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka. Police found the MP staying in an adjacent room and recovered several handwritten notes from the scene. The MP had earlier acknowledged Mariam as his second wife after personal videos of the two circulated on social media last July. He was elected to the 13th National Parliament from Satkhira-4 on a Jamaat-e-Islami nomination.

Bangladesh Mahila Parishad stated that the incident tarnishes the image of parliament and raises serious questions about women's safety in official residences as well as the accountability of elected representatives to the public. The organization has strongly demanded a fair and impartial investigation into the death, followed by appropriate action against those found responsible. It further called for ensuring the safety of all women and children at home, outside, and in workplaces, urging an end to the recurrence of such incidents, and appealed for a social movement against violence toward women and girls.
