According to local media reports, on 7 September 2026 the body of a Santal teenage girl, Riya Soren, was found hanging in a rented house in the Mangalkhali area of Murapara union, Rupganj upazila, Narayanganj district. Riya's family and relatives have rejected the suicide theory, claiming she was deliberately killed, and they have expressed suspicion about the role of the house owner in her death. Riya's family home is in Nababganj upazila, Dinajpur. Reports indicate that about two years ago she moved to the rented house in Mangalkhali along with her mother, Ribeka Murmu. Around two months before the incident, her mother returned to Dinajpur, but Riya continued to live in the rented house alone. She was working temporarily at a nearby multinational plastic products factory, where her mother had also previously worked. Reacting to the incident, the Narayanganj District Committee of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, through its President Rina Ahmed and General Secretary Rahima Khatun, has strongly demanded a fair and thorough investigation to uncover the truth behind Riya Soren's death and called for a speedy trial of those responsible.
